Is it expensive to repair a TV/DVD player please?

It’s a CARS TV/DVD player, 9 weeks out of guarantee. It keeps switching off. I think it’s a safety device because something’s overheating. It cost £130.00 and my grandson really loves it.

Can anyone tell me whether it would be economical to have it repaired please?

A typical television repair will START at £50 if it’s a simple fault. Don’t give up - read on……

If it is only nine weeks out of guarantee then you may still rights to a free (or at least part-funded) repair under the Sale of Goods Act.

This clearly states that good must be of Merchantable Quality and Fit For Purpose.

In practice this means that the courts will hold that a television set should last more than 1 year even if it was “only” £130.

You must go back to where you bought it, with proof of purchase (receipt or credit card slip/statement or whatever) and demand your rights under the Act. It’s amazing how quickly shop managers back down when you confront them with the Act.

Also, some shops will try to make you contact the manufacturer directly. That is not the case in law. Your contract of sale was with the dealer not the maker. Therefore the shop cannot abrogate their responsibility. They can be very heavily fined if they try.

Follow the Link below and print out a copy of the guidance notes on the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982. Take it with you to the shop.
You should make a point of memorising the FAQ numbers 8 and 9 and quoting it them.

Further advice will be available from your local Citizens Advice Bureau (check Yellow Pages) if you need it.

You have consumer rights enshirned in Law and it makes my blood boil when shops try to fob you off. They rely on customers shrugging their shoulders and walking off. Don’t let them get away with selling you boxes that fail as soon as the guarantee expires.
You must be prepared to stand up the management and not cave in. You should get a satisfactory resolution on the spot.

That is, don’t let them fob you off with “the manager’s not here, come back next week”. It will be whoever is in charge of the shop at the time of your visit that has to deal with you.
It may help if you take your grandchild (and his friends) with you when you complain. Make sure that have lots of stick sweets and chokkies (honest. shopkeepers hate noisy kids and will be more inclined to deal with you instead of keeping you waiting).

Any small claims court will hold that a television should last at least 5 years.

Experience:
Lots, but the most recent was I bought a dud item from Marks and Spencer (yes, really!) and waved my copy of the act in front of them and got my money back. This is your rights as a consumer.

I have a Philips tv with a built in dvd player. for some reason the region in the dvd player changed and i cant watch my movies anymore. how do i change it back?

There should be NO WAY you can change a modern DVD players region. If for some reason it has changed, I have never heard of it and you should consult Philips directly. I have been selling DVD players since they were first
