Loft in New York by UNstudio

UNstudio is at the origin of the design of a loft in Greenwich Village in Manhattan (New York), he explores the interaction between a gallery and a living space. The main walls in the loft use organic and circular forms, ceilings adopting the same trend give all homogeneity enabling parts to blend with each other.

The space is long and wide, it has been divided into comfortable and balanced proportions for home use, while simultaneously generating a large amount of wall space for displaying works of art.
Sheltered corners and niches in the curves, it’s a mixture floating between exposure in the rays of the libraries on one side and showcase on the other side. The client as a collector was looking for a space in which he could live comfortably while interacting with many tables, objects, and books gathered here.

The ceiling is involved in transitions of different spaces, especially inter-changeable light and opacity, it creates a field of ambient lighting diffuse or localized areas. The opaque portion of the ceiling consists of subtly arched elements that give the impression of an unlimited ceiling it being illuminated by 18,000 lamps led.

The third element that the architect added to this mixture is the appreciation of the city which is expressed in “framing of views”. Old (smaller) Windows in the south wall were replaced to open the view in the direction of Manhattan. The choice of the furniture is just as much organic as masonry, with including the Eames chairs for the House.
It is a modern realization of high quality, a signed UNstudio loft which will certainly be school.
